Your Life Is A Vapour — What The Bible Says About Wasted Time

There's a verse I come back to more than almost any other:

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

— James 4:14

A vapour. Not a long book with a table of contents you can skip ahead in. A breath, visible for a second, and then gone.

I don't bring that up to be morbid. I bring it up because it's the single most clarifying idea I know for how to spend a Tuesday.

Urgency Isn't The Enemy Of Faith

Some people hear "life is short" and think it's a call to panic or to grab everything they can before the clock runs out. I don't read it that way. I read it as permission to stop pretending you have infinite time to get around to the things you actually believe matter.

If you say faith matters to you, but it only shows up in the leftover time after everything else — that's not what James was pointing at. A vapour doesn't get a leftover slot. It's already halfway gone by the time you notice it.

What This Actually Changes

For me, this verse is the reason I stopped treating "someday" as a real plan. Someday I'll build something of my own. Someday I'll spend more time on what I actually believe. Someday isn't a day on the calendar — it's just a nicer-sounding way of saying "never," said by someone who still thinks they have time.

You don't need a dramatic life overhaul to take this seriously. You need to ask, honestly, whether the way you're spending this week reflects what you'd say matters if someone asked you outright.
